New Chapter = New Bedroom

I shared a room with my sister for about 20 years. We haven’t redecorated since Maria & I were little, and I’m not really a huge fan of pink. Maria got married over the summer and moved out. It made me quite sad to have her suddenly gone from our little room. I didn’t think to take “before” pics until we moved out her furniture, but oh well…

…aaaaaaand after:

My walls received a coat of light sage paint and thick white curtains nicely diffuse the natural light from my awesomely large window. Since these photos were taken, I have found a chocolate brown bed skirt to replace the bed skirt from two bedding sets ago, and taken Mom & Dad’s old armchair and put it to the left of my bookcase. Which brings me to my bookcase: I love it.

My room is now my little oasis. I can’t afford to have my own place, but I at least have a little retreat that feels like I belong there. I smile when I walk in, and I’m smiling when I leave. Remarkable what a coat of paint and some re-designing will do. It’s also nice to have my easel next to my bed for those middle-of-the-night wake-ups when I can’t fall back to sleep.

Renovated

The old, pale pink wallpaper had been removed, as had the white curtains, and the glass chandelier (a cleaning nightmare) was on its way out.

Mom, Dad, and I spent a whirlwind of a weekend painting as though our lives depended on it.  They needed a drastic change, and that is exactly what they got:

BAM.

They got a new light fixture, and I love it so much I may confiscate it if I ever move outta here.

A Year In Review

I’m terrible with resolutions, so I’m not making any this year.  Instead, I’m reflecting on a year of ups and downs, focusing more on the ups, however big or small they were.

My parents have continued to lovingly welcome me to live in their home, rent-free.  They’re pretty awesome.

I was able to celebrate my Baba’s 80th birthday with her:

I reunited with my dear former apartment-mates, Meggie, Amy, and Casey  in Chicago.  Through the wonders of technology, we were joined by Whitney in Bulgaria, via Skype.

I’ve been able to spend more time with dear friends, like Megan & Valerie.

I celebrated the weddings of many special people this past year, including:

Tom & Christine Chiaccio

Ben & Kerrie Taylor

Steve & Cortney Conn

Zach & Janelle Taylor

I’ve rejoiced with loved ones who have brought new life into the world.  Welcome to the babies!!!

Isaiah!

Skylar!

Baby Theresa, whom I do not yet have a picture!  Babies yet to arrive are Baby Oakleaf and Baby Constantino, and I’m excited for them all.

I’ve become a member of a church plant that has given me a huge family to be a part of, and they bless me immensely.

I’ve met a world of bloggers who are artists, cooks, writers, and thinkers, and they continue to inspire and delight me each day.  Basically, 2010 was about reconnecting with people.  People can be the worst part of your day, but they are also what makes life most beautiful.

“Hey, Maria!”

Remember that corner of the back porch that Danger said was his favorite part of the house?  Well, look what Dad and I did on Saturday:

Light

I have always loved soft lighting, the kind that comes from candles and Christmas lights and a fireplace.  I always feel so comfortable, cozy, and safe when the glaring lamps are turned off and the only light in our house comes from twinkling Christmas lights and candles.  Perhaps it’s because the bright lamps make me think of my migraines and how much bright light hurts when a migraine is harassing me.

It feels most like Christmas when it’s dark outside, and our house softly glows with countless twinkling Christmas lights and candles.  Sometimes, more darkness can be a good thing.
